Musée océanographique de Monaco

You can of course spend Monaco counting Ferraris. Or walk into a museum built into the cliff. Different ambitions.

LES NIÇOISES SAY

Not an art museum, but culturally it belongs here. The building is spectacular, the aquariums are substantial and Monaco’s oceanographic history gives the Rock more depth.

Why we go

Opened in 1910, the museum combines historic collections, marine science, aquariums and exhibitions. Its almost impossible position above the Mediterranean is part of the experience.

What to actually look at

The aquariums, obviously, but also the historic halls and architecture. The museum suggests around two hours. For once, do not try to “do Monaco” in 47 minutes.

PRACTICAL

Open almost all year, except 25 December and the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend. July and August: 9:30am to 8pm. Checked August 2026.

Monaco can be exhausting in its efforts to impress. Here, the sea does a better job.
