Musée des explorations du monde

Cannes has a museum in a medieval castle on Le Suquet. Strangely, nobody shouts this at you at the airport.

LES NIÇOISES SAY

The setting is almost as interesting as the collection: former castle of the Lérins monks, Suquet lanes, courtyard, tower and panorama. Yes, Cannes also has walls older than a palace hotel.

Why we go

The museum holds collections connected with the Himalayas, Arctic, Oceania, Africa, antiquities and Orientalism. The mix is curious and its museum history can feel dated, which makes it worth looking at with contemporary eyes.

What to actually look at

Climb the tower when access is open. The panorama puts Cannes back into geographical perspective: a bay, islands, an old quarter, and only then the yachts.

PRACTICAL

July and August: open daily 10am to 7pm, with Wednesday late opening until 9pm. Full price listed at €6.50. Checked August 2026.

If you spend three days on La Croisette and decide Cannes has no culture, pichoun, the problem may not be Cannes.
