Hotel du Couvent
Yes, it's expensive. So is regretting your hotel for four nights, pichoun.
Above the lanes of Old Nice, the former Visitation convent is now an 88-room-and-suite hotel with gardens, Roman-inspired thermal baths and several pools. This is not a generic luxury hotel that added three olive trees to the lobby and called it Provence. The building actually has a past, and it shows.
Annoyingly, it is as good as it looks. Mèfi though : lovely old stone does not anaesthetise your credit card.
Why it makes the cut
Because it does not feel interchangeable. The 17th-century convent, gardens, restrained colours and old volumes give the place an actual identity. The hotel also lists Roman-inspired thermal baths, a 20-metre lap pool, additional pools, a Movement Studio and several places to eat and drink.
And you are in Old Nice. You walk out the door. Cours Saleya, the sea, Castle Hill and the lanes are right there. Renting a car to stay here would be an impressively complicated way to sponsor an underground car park.
Who it is for
- You want Old Nice without giving up calm and space.
- You care about the building as much as the size of the television in the room.
- You are actually going to use the gardens, baths and pools, not merely photograph them for Instagram.
Mèfi if...
- Your first filter is lowest price. The price here has a rather healthy opinion of itself.
- You plan to drive in and out three times a day. Old Nice is pedestrian and the hotel arranges valet access.
- You want to sleep directly on the beach. The sea is close, but the hotel sits inside the old town.
