Where to eat in Villefranche-sur-Mer: 2 tables before choosing at random on the quay

The bay works very hard to seduce you. Some restaurants know this saves them having to try as hard. Mèfi, pichoun. We are keeping two places to start.

A waterfront table is not automatically a tourist trap. It is not diplomatic immunity either.

La Mère Germaine

For the waterfront institution that has been here since 1938.

A historic Villefranche address, La Mère Germaine serves Mediterranean cooking centred on seasonal produce and the sea. The setting is spectacular, yes. At least the restaurant was not invented yesterday to photograph it.

7 quai de l’Amiral Courbet. Opening times vary with the season, so check before heading down to the harbour.

La Belle Etoile

For leaving the waterfront and eating in the old town.

A small gastronomic table in the old town lanes, serving French food with Mediterranean accents. The restaurant highlights fresh seasonal produce, including fish supplied by a local fisherman.

1 rue Baron de Brès. The restaurant lists evening service. The car stays outside. Quite right too.

Villefranche is small. Your ability to choose a terrace simply because it is directly in front of you remains surprisingly large.
